Verb classes
Most Czech verbs fall into one of five classes, which determine their conjugation patterns. The future tense of být would be classified as a Class I verb because of its endings. Examples of the present tense of each class and some common irregular verbs follow in the tables below:

Druhá světová válka (1939-1945)
→World War II
Události, které následovaly po přijetí mnichovské dohody, nabraly rychlý spád.
→The events which followed the acceptance of the Munich Agreement quickly picked up speed.
Dne 5. října 1938 prezident Beneš abdikuje a odchází do zahraniční emigrace.
→On October 5, 1938, President Beneš abdicated and went into foreign exile.
14. března 1939 slovenský sněm v Bratislavě vyhlásil nezávislý a samostatný slovenský stát.
→ On March 14, 1939, the Slovak Parliament in Bratislava declared a separate, independent state.
Hitlerovým výnosem ze 16. března 1939 byl na území českých zemí vyhlášen PROTEKTORÁT ČECHY A MORAVA jako autonomní součást Velkoněmecké říše.
→The Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia was declared in the territories of the Czech state as an autonomous part of the Greater German Reich by Hitler´s decree of March 16, 1939.
V čele okupační správy stál říšský protektor Konstantin von Neurath.
→At the head of the occupational authorities stood the "Imperial Protector" Konstantin von Neurath.
Již v prvních dnech protektorátu se objevují první zárodky odporu v různých formách:
→The first seeds of resistance appeared in various forms during the first days of the Protectorate.
I - Návraty k tradicím národa a kulturní minulosti (například oslavy památky Jana Husa, převoz ostatků Karla Hynka Máchy)
→I. A return to the traditions of the nation and the cultural past (for example, celebrations at the John Hus Monument, transfer of the remains of Karel Hynek Mácha).
II - Při manifestaci na oslavu 28. října 1939 byl německými vojáky postřelen student Jan Opletal, který 11. listopadu 1939 svému zranění podlehl.
→II. A student, Jan Opletal, was shot by German soldiers on October. 28, 1939, at a demonstration to mark the anniversary of independence, and later succumbed to his injuries on November 11, 1939.
Demonstrace studentů u jeho hrobu se staly záminkou pro uzavření vysokých škol nacisty (16. - 17. listopadu 1939).
→Demonstrations by students at his grave were the pretext for the closing of universities by the Nazis (November 16-17, 1939). Devět studentů bylo bez rozsudku popraveno a dalších 1200 vysokoškoláků odvedeno do koncentračních táborů.
→Nine of the students were executed without trial and another 1,200 university students were taken away to concentration camps.
Na počest tohoto dne je 17. listopad slaven jako Den studentů.
→In honor of this day, November 17 is celebrated as Students´ Day.
III - Organizovaný odboj, který měl dvě formy : - domácí a zahraniční (s centrem v Londýně a v Moskvě).
→III. The organized resistance movement took two forms: domestic and foreign (with centers in London and Moscow).
Po pádu Francie se středisko zahraničního odboje přeneslo do Anglie.
→After the fall of France, the center of foreign resistance moved to England.
V Anglii se v létě 1940 organizovaly československé vojenské jednotky.
→In the summer of 1940 Czechoslovak military units were organized in England.
Pozemní jednotky prováděly obranu anglického pobřeží.
→Ground forces were engaged in the defense of the English coast.
Letecké jednotky se účastnily bitvy o Anglii.
→Airborne units took part in battles over England.
Po uznání exilové vlády roku 1941 vzniká také československá vojenská jednotka na sovětském území.
→After recognition of the government in exile in 1941, Czechoslovak military units were also formed on Soviet territory.
Roku 1942 se v Buzuluku zformoval I. čs. samostatný polní prapor v čele s generálem Ludvíkem Svobodou, který pomáhá při osvobozování sovětského území a mimo jiné se účastní spolu s Rudou armádou 8. září 1944 i karpatsko-dukelské operace.
→ In 1942 the first independent Czechoslovak field battalion was formed in Buzuluk, with Ludvík Svoboda at its head. It helped in the liberation of Soviet territory and, among other things, took part in the Carpathian Dukla operation together with the Red Army on September 8, 1944.
Od konce roku 1939-40 probíhá v protektorátu několik vln zatýkání.
→At the end of 1939 the first of several series of arrests began.
Velice silně byla poškozena činnost domácího odboje.
→The activity of the home resistance movement was greatly affected.
Pro klid a pořádek v protektorátě byl dosavadní protektor Neurath nahrazen Reinhardem Heydrichem.
→For purposes of law and order in the Protectorate, Neurath, its ruler up to that time, was replaced by Reinhard Heydrich.
27. září 1941 přijíždí Heydrich do Prahy s cílem radikálně změnit situaci.
→On September 27, 1941 Heydrich came to Prague with the aim of radically changing the situation.
Okamžitě vyhlašuje stanné právo, dochází k teroru, zatýkání, popravám, transportům a opatřením ve správě a hospodářství.
→He immediately declared martial law. Terror, arrests, executions and transports began, and there were measures in the administration and economy.
Exilová vláda vysílá vycvičené a technicky vybavené parašutisty s cílem obnovit zpřetrhané kontakty, udržovat spojení a rozvíjet sabotáže.
→The government in exile sent trained and technically well-equipped parachutists to re-establish lost contacts, maintain communication and spread sabotage.
Nejvýznamnější z operací bylo provedení atentátu na Heydricha.
→The most significant of these operations was carrying out the assassination of Heydrich.
Účastnili se jí Gabčík, Kubiš, Opálka a Čurda.
→ Gabčík, Kubiš, Opálka and Čurda took part in this.
27. května 1942 byl tento atentát v Praze proveden.
→On May 27, 1942, the assassination was carried out in Prague.
Heydrich zranění podlehl a následovalo období tvrdých represí vůči českému národu.
→Heydrich died of his wounds, and a time of harsh repression against the Czech nation followed.
Více než 1500 osob popraveno, 3000 lidí zatčeno, zničeny a vyvražděny Lidice (10. června 1942) a Ležáky (24. června 1942).
→More than 1,500 people were executed, 3,000 people arrested. Lidice (June 10, 1942) and Ležáky (June 24, 1942) were destroyed and their populations massacred.
Atentátnici byli zradou Čurdy dopadeni.
→The assassins were apprehended through the betrayal of Čurda.
Již počátkem roku 1942 se objevují nové projevy rezistence, které se stupňují až k Pražskému povstání roku 1945. 9. května 1945 je Praha osvobozena Rudou armádou a v Evropě oficiálně končí druhá světová válka.
→Already by the beginning of 1942, new displays of resistance had appeared, escalating into the Prague Uprising of 1945. On May 9, 1945, Prague was liberated by the Red Army, and the Second World War in Europe officially ended.
